Birdwatchers Flock to Mullum Wetlands
Mansfield’s Mullum Wetlands proved to be the perfect setting for an eager group of 14 bird watchers on Saturday, 11 October. Guided by local ecologist Bertram Lobert, participants enjoyed the first walk in a new series of bird-focused events sponsored by the Delatite Landcare Group.
The walks aim to help locals build confidence in identifying bird species, improve their birdwatching skills, and deepen understanding of bird behaviour and habitat needs. This first session focused on seasonal visitors — those species that come and go throughout the year — and their breeding habits.
Over a relaxed two-hour stroll through the wetlands, the group observed an impressive 30 bird species, with many showing off their vibrant breeding plumage. Highlights included sightings of both resident and migratory species, giving participants plenty to discuss and learn about.
Bertram shared fascinating insights into how different birds adapt to changing seasons, choose their nesting sites, and raise their young — helping participants appreciate the intricate connections between habitat, food availability, and breeding success.
By the end of the morning, the group had not only added many birds to their lists but also strengthened their understanding of how valuable habitats like Mullum Wetlands are to Mansfield’s local biodiversity.
You can view the full list of species recorded via the eBird Checklist – Mullum Wetlands.
The next bird walk will take place on Sunday, 9th November, at a more secluded rural location on private property close to Mansfield. This promises to be another rewarding experience, with new species and habitats to explore. Click Here to register.
A big thank you to John Gras for sharing his beautiful photos from the day — and to everyone who joined in for making it such a positive start to the series.
