Help Stop the Spread of European Wasps
European wasps are becoming an increasing concern across the Mansfield region. These aggressive invaders not only disrupt outdoor activities and picnics, but also pose a serious threat to our local environment, native wildlife, and community wellbeing.
Why We Need to Control European Wasps
European wasps are not native to Australia. Without natural predators here, their numbers can quickly grow out of control. Each nest can contain thousands of wasps, all competing for food and space. They feed on insects, meat, fruit, and sugary foods, putting them in direct competition with our native pollinators such as bees and native wasps.
High wasp populations can harm local ecosystems by reducing pollination, preying on beneficial insects, and even disturbing birds and small mammals. They also present a risk to humans and pets, as their stings are painful and can cause severe allergic reactions.
When and How to Act
Autumn and early spring are the most important times to take action. These are the periods when queen wasps are searching for food or beginning to establish new nests. Trapping queens now can prevent thousands of worker wasps later in the season.
The good news is that itβs easy to make a difference. The Mansfield Shire Council has created an excellent fact sheet outlining how to build and place effective wasp traps using simple, natural ingredients. Setting traps in your garden, paddock, or around local parks can make a big impact in reducing wasp numbers before summer.
How You Can Help
Set traps early in the season (autumn and spring).
Avoid leaving food or drink uncovered outdoors.
Report any large or active nests to your local council.
Share information with neighbours and friends β community-wide action is key.
Together, we can reduce the impact of European wasps on our environment and keep Mansfield a safer, more enjoyable place for people and wildlife alike. πΏπ
