Protecting Mansfield’s Paddock Trees – Subsidised Stock Proof Tree Guards Available Again

Across the Mansfield Shire, old paddock trees are an important part of our landscape. These scattered trees provide essential habitat for wildlife, offer shade and shelter for livestock, help reduce erosion, improve soil health, and contribute to biodiversity across farming landscapes.

Many of the large old eucalypts we see in paddocks today are hundreds of years old and provide valuable nesting hollows for birds, bats, possums, and gliders. The challenge is that there are often very few younger trees coming through to replace them. Grazing pressure, lack of natural regeneration, and changing land use can all make it difficult for new trees to establish.

To help support the next generation of paddock trees, Up2Us Landcare Alliance is once again offering subsidised stock proof tree guards and indigenous eucalypt seedlings to landholders within the Mansfield Shire.

Each guard is a sturdy 1.8m high weldmesh guard designed to protect young trees from livestock while they establish. Every guard also comes with an indigenous eucalypt seedling suitable for the local area.

The guards are available at a subsidised cost of $35 each, with a limit of three guards per landholder/property. Numbers are limited.

Program Details

  • Properties must be located within the Mansfield Shire

  • Limit of 3 guards per landholder/property

  • Guards must be collected from Nutrien Ag, Mansfield on Wednesday 10 June

  • Guards are large (750mm x 1800mm), so a trailer or suitable vehicle will be required for collection

  • Participants are asked to take a photo of their installed guard and email it to Up2Us

Even planting and protecting a small number of trees can make a long-term difference for local wildlife, farm productivity, and the health of our landscape.
