Mushroom Encounters 2025: A Week of Fungal Wonder

What a phenomenal week it’s been celebrating the captivating world of fungi with renowned ecologist and author Alison Pouliot!

Our two-day immersive workshop in Merrijig was a true celebration of the senses. Set against the backdrop of autumn bushland and crackling fires, participants explored the incredible diversity of local fungi through a curated display of specimens. With expert guidance from Alison and her wonderful assistants Claire and Marita, attendees had the chance to examine fungi up close—admiring their textures, colours, and unique features.

Each afternoon, the group set off on guided fungi forays into the surrounding forest. These walks offered participants a chance to identify fungi in their natural habitats, deepen their understanding of fungal ecology, and develop an appreciation for the hidden networks supporting our ecosystems.

Earlier in the week, things kicked off with a special evening at Ink Bookshop in Mansfield for the official launch of Alison’s new book, Funga Obscura. The event drew a full house of fungi enthusiasts eager to hear Alison share stories and insights from her work. The atmosphere was electric, with lively conversation and a shared appreciation for the mystery and beauty of fungi.

A huge thank you to Alison for her generosity and passion, to Claire and Marita for their support and expertise, and to every participant who joined us throughout the week. It’s clear that the fungi-curious community is alive and thriving in our region, and we’re so grateful to be part of it.

We hope this week’s encounters have inspired a deeper curiosity about the often-overlooked fungi kingdom—and that you'll keep exploring the magic beneath your feet.
