Grade 5 Students Designing Nest Boxes for Local Wildlife
In July, Kim and Jess from Up2Us Landcare Alliance visited Mansfield Primary School to share the importance of nest boxes for native wildlife. Nest boxes provide vital shelter for species such as birds, bats, and possums, especially as natural habitats continue to face pressures from urban development and climate impacts.
Since the visit, the Grade 5 students have been enthusiastically designing their own nest boxes. Using cardboard models, they’ve been testing their ideas to ensure the boxes will be safe, functional, and wildlife-friendly.
Next term, the students will move from design to creation, building real nest boxes to be installed across our community. This hands-on project not only teaches students about wildlife conservation but also inspires a connection to nature and stewardship of the environment.
This initiative is proudly supported by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority through funding from the State Government and Victorian Landcare Program.
We can’t wait to see these nest boxes installed and to watch our native wildlife make themselves at home!
