Blackberry, briar rose and gorse are some of the toughest weeds a landholder can face. Once they're established, they spread fast. They choke out pasture, take over creek banks and give shelter to rabbits and foxes. And they rarely go away with a single treatment.
That's why Up2Us Landcare Alliance is running a free, hands-on morning on managing woody weeds. It's on Sunday 6 December, 9:00am to 12:00pm, at a location in the Mansfield Shire to be announced. You'll hear from three experts, see the methods in action and go home with a plan that suits your property.
Chemical control and mulching with Sean Horsburgh, SMH Weed Control
Sean will cover the practical side of chemical control: which chemicals to use, the best time of year to treat, and the safety precautions and permits involved. He'll explain how to match equipment to the size of the job, how to spray safely near waterways and other vegetation, and what to consider for livestock and other animals. He'll also demonstrate how to treat woody weeds.
Sean will also run a mulching demonstration, showing why and how you'd mulch weeds. Mulching is one of many tools, and Sean's key message is that combining several methods works best for keeping woody weeds in check across pastures, waterways, bushland and gardens.
Drone spraying with Matthew Empey, Paton Air
Steep gullies, rocky slopes and dense infestations can be hard or unsafe to reach on foot. Matthew will explain how drones can target woody weeds in complex terrain, then show you a live drone spraying demonstration.
Goats as a non-chemical option with Melinda, 2 Girls & Their Goats
In sensitive spots like waterways, or where there's vegetation you want to protect, goats can be a good alternative to chemicals. Melinda will talk about using goats for woody weed control and which breeds suit the job best. She'll also cover goat behaviour, animal welfare, fencing and shelter, and transporting goats.
Help with the cost
Up2Us staff will be on hand with information about rebates that can help landholders manage woody weeds. Free copies of Weeds of the Goulburn Broken will also be available on the day.
