The Howqua Runs High

Recent rainfall has brought the Howqua River up, and Howqua Valley Landcare Group member David Looker was on hand to capture it in full flow.
The images show a river with real purpose — fast-moving, brown with sediment, and spilling wide across its banks. Fallen trees, gradually working their way downstream over time, have settled into the current and now stretch across the water in tangled formations..
As it turns out, those fallen trees are more than just a striking sight. Submerged and partially submerged timber creates exactly the kind of complex habitat that native fish thrive in — offering shelter, feeding opportunities, and protection from predators. If you've been looking for a good spot to drop a line, you may have just found it.
The Howqua River is one of the valley's most treasured assets, and moments like this — when the rain comes and the river reminds you of its power — are a good reminder of why the work of monitoring and protecting it matters so much.
Keep an eye on water levels before heading to the river after heavy rain.
