New Walking Track at Howqua Inlet

A new walking track has been built at Howqua Inlet by local residents. Until now, people walking to the Howqua Valley Holiday Park to collect the paper had to use the busy roadside. Resident Nick Hyslop started the project, and after three years of work, collaboration with stakeholders, community members and fundraising, the first section is complete. Works carried out include a gravel path, additional indigenous plantings to screen the road, safety signage, bollards and drainage points. Community working bees also helped get the works done.

The track starts at Barnett's Road and runs west along the Mansfield-Woods Point Road to the Howqua Bushland Reserve. It passes through remnant vegetation with orchids, lilies, native grasses and small grass trees in flower. Ten bird species were recorded in a ten-minute walk, including Sacred Kingfisher, Rufous Whistler and several honeyeaters. As well as extending the track to the Howqua Valley Holiday Park, the plan includes treating woody weeds, such as blackberry and broom. The track is definitely worth a visit, below are some images of wildflowers seen along the path.
