Join us for an evening get-together and walk as part of our continuing survey of Southern Greater Gliders (SGG) in our own district. As Australia’s largest gliding marsupial, SGGs were once common but are now officially endangered. This late-autumn survey will be on private property in Boorolite where there is a known population of gliders. Learn about these amazing creatures, their food requirements, habitat and the pressure they are under, as we survey their population number and location, led by well-known local ecologist Bertram Lobert.
The event duration will be around 3 hours, starting at 5:30 PM for an introduction to SGGs and a BBQ/sausage sizzle (included). This will be followed by the survey walk that we expect to finish around 8:30 PM. Parking is limited and walking to and from the actual venue is required.
NOTES: this event is considered suitable for families with school age (and up) children but does involve night walking on (and off) quite rough farm tracks and some steep hilly terrain; overall we expect to walk around 3 km. The walk will be along the forest margin within an area grazed by cattle.
Numbers attending will be strictly limited to 25, and the event is weather dependent.
Appropriate clothing and foot-ware, a good torch/spotlight/headlamp are necessary, good binoculars are also useful.
