Woody Weed Control, Managing Woody weeds on your property

Blackberry, briar rose, gorse… woody weeds can quickly take over pastures, waterways, bushland and gardens. Join Up2Us Landcare Alliance for a practical morning with industry experts and learn how to get on top of them, and stay on top of them.

Sunday 6 December | 9:00am – 12:00pm
Location: Mansfield Shire (venue to be announced)
Cost: Free. Morning tea provided.

What you’ll learn

Hear from three experts on chemical, mechanical, aerial and grazing approaches to woody weed control.

Sean Horsburgh, SMH Weed Control will take you through chemical control of woody weeds, covering:

  • Which chemicals to use, and the best time of year to treat

  • Safety considerations and any permits you may need

  • Choosing equipment to suit the size of the job

  • Spraying near waterways and other vegetation

  • Impacts on livestock and other animals

Sean will demonstrate how to treat woody weeds. He’ll also give a mulching demonstration, explaining why and how you’d mulch weeds and where it fits as one of many tools. He’ll show why combining several control methods works best for keeping woody weeds under control over the long term.

Matthew Empey, Paton Air will show how drones can target woody weeds in steep or hard-to-reach terrain, with a live drone spraying demonstration.

Melinda Deans-Draper, 2 Girls & Their Goats will talk about using goats as a non-chemical way to control woody weeds. Goats are especially useful in sensitive places like waterways, or where there’s other vegetation you don’t want to damage. Melinda will cover:

  • Using goats for woody weed control

  • Which goat breeds are best suited to weed control

  • Goat behaviour

  • Animal welfare considerations

  • Fencing and shelter requirements

  • Transporting goats
